ADHD Symptoms Arise In The Context Of ChangeChange credit tidefan

You cannot step twice into the same river.

Hericlitus

Hericlitus, only 2500 years ago 😉 , got the message many routinely miss in the evolution of understanding the living dynamics of ADHD and executive function. Time and change persist as the most predictable variables. One cannot understand executive function disorders [EFD] without understanding context, change and denial. Label making, even new label making, is only label making.

Rivers Flow Through Time

The river, your personal river of life, is constantly changing – and our natural instincts drive us to lock it down. Those with Executive Function Challenges work even harder to avoid transition and change. Change creates discomfort because it involves more thinking, and increased sorting, with increased cognitive abundance and fewer places to put new things. If we overlook the common denominator of time and change in ADHD relationships, in negotiating those potentially frozen reactions, we remain arrested in our own development. As a marketing guy once told me: “You only live once, but you can be immature for a lifetime.” Think: Executive Function Arrest, Arrested Development, Denial of Change – Stuck.

Labels deny change. Labels avoid change. Labels avoid both time and context. Context, the reality of life, carries many variables. Avoiding context avoids new variables. Labels avoid the complexity of life. ADHD labels that avoid function and the dynamic of change in the context of specific life realities simply don't cover the necessary variables to provide improved treatment targets.
