Neurofeedback: from What, to Why, to How – Kurt Othmer from EEG Info on CorePsych Radio

This video of Kurt will give you just a few moments viewing his interesting new Cygnet software at EEG Info – and a hint of what we will be talking about on CorePsych Radio this Thursday. Join us then to hear much more on this interesting, often unappreciated, NFB science and technology:

EEG Info on Peak Performance – 4.56 min

Kurt and Siegfried

Several years ago I spent an animated evening at dinner in DC with several Neurofeedback [NFB] luminaries, including Kurt's father Siegfried, one of the pioneers in the development of NFB as a treatment, for a variety of challenging and refractory conditions. See this interview with Siegfried, a delightful conversationalist – a true visionary.

Later I met Kurt at a Psychotherapy Networker meeting in DC years ago, – and I know you will appreciate his deep perspective on the evolution of NFB as it applies to brain and psychological recovery processes – from ADHD to Autism Spectrum Disorders. NFB can significantly contribute to recovery with PTSD, and Brain Injury, and should become a standard of care for those with these challenging conditions.

If you haven't heard of NFB, or are a trained NFB practitioner, please join us for more details on the what, why and how of evolved NFB this Thursday PM!

The detailed agenda for the radio program is here in pdf and on the CorePsych Radio Page.

See you there,

  1. This is such an interesting concept! The video does a great job of showcasing the sophistication of the software. I work for icyou.com, and we are always looking for the latest, most innovative and up-to-date methods for treating all health problems. As you suggest, the video leaves the viewer wanting to know more about the clinical side of NFB–how the software relates to the condition(s) of the “client,” and what that means to the clinician. We’d really like to see this video and other videos on icyou.com. It could be great exposure for Cygnet and NFB, and you’d only have to give us permission to feature your video(s) on icyou. We can do the rest. Again, enjoyed the video; exciting, interesting information.

  2. Josh says:

    Dr. Parker,

Sorry for the radio silence recently. Work has been consuming, to say the least.

I saw this pass by my reader. If you are savvy with a soldering iron, it is possible to build your own EEG at home, actually. Check out the OpenEEG project:
    http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/doc/
and, an offshoot model of the OpenEEG, the MonolithEEG:
    http://freenet-homepage.de/moosec/projekte/simpleeeg/index-Dateien/Page431.htm

If I had some free time, I’d build one of these but, alas, I do not. I’ve heard good things, though.

Without having listened to the podcast yet, I am curious as to your opinion on the efficacy of neurofeedback in ADHD. All things that I have seen point to neurofeedback as being pretty much useless in ADHD. I haven’t reviewed the literature for other disorders, though. I imagine neurofeedback could be incredible for anxiety.

Will be attempting to catch up on reading sometime soon! Take care. 🙂

    • Josh,
Just as everything else in medicine, the science is evolving – and while not 100%, very compelling.

We have 3 neurofeedback practitioners in my Va Beach office and have seen some rather remarkable improvements in many with equivocal response to the meds. My own take, and I asked Kurt about this in the interview: Meds can be helpful in working with NFB, NFB does much of the same thing as meds – but with the important exception that one can have improvement over time. As a side note, NFB will work with any other interventions as well, such as Neurotransmitter Measurement and correction. This specific question is so interesting because it does drive to the point that often we have to do more than ‘one pristine thing’ to help out.

      My own take:
      Meds are often insufficient alone,
      NFB can be insufficient alone,
Supplements often don’t close the deal alone,
Neurotransmitter adjustments also need lifestyle and perhaps some med changes.

Bringing these disciplines together has proven very constructive with the most challenging people, and we have been using supplements with those who want absolutely no meds… and those targeted supplement interventions are working quite well with lifestyle, exercise and sleep changing. We use the NT testing, really look hard at hormones, use the NT testing, and the Comprehensive Metabolic Profile by Metametrix. Measurement and clear evidence are the keys to targeted treatment.

You are the man, building your own EEG… I was joking with Kurt, I’m still trying to get the implications of megahertz….
