ADHD: Not A Categorical Diagnosis  ADHD Complications: Working Memory

Common Sense: Working memory imbalances don't interfere with working memory in every circumstance – they only gum up the works, like molasses in January, under certain circumstances, in specific contexts, in specific real-life situations.

Working Memory Sequence:

  1. Identifies the prob
  2. Fixes the problem
  3. Save the process for the next reality

Think Percentages: explain to yourself and clients that ADHD does not occur in every circumstance, but only those life situations listed below with the following characteristics [-and always remember the big percentages of functioning well, then delineate the smaller percentage, the specific problem contexts of not-doing-well with executive function]:

Problem Contexts: The Default Complexity Of Life Changes

  1. Increased Variables
  2. Decreased Structure
  3. No Stimulating Focus

Any one of these, any combination, can kick off Prefrontal Cortical Sorting Problems. Much of anyone's life experience, in which they aren't coping with change or transition of any kind, can work very well. But change in life circumstances for those who suffer with ADHD can become dramatically symptomatic. Examples:

  1. 6th grade
  2. 9th grade [first year of high school]
  3. 11th grade
  4. Freshman year college
  5. Freshman year grad school
  6. Promotion
  7. New job
  8. Move to great complexity

Working Memory Challenges Revealed In Those Contexts

  1. Acting without thinking
  2. Thinking without acting
  3. Not thinking or acting

For ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment, Recognize

  1. Context
  2. Change
  3. Percentages
  4. Labels don't work with those variables.

Noteworthy: You may suffer with only 10-20% ADHD, but that percentage can dramatically stop your life.
